Focus was established in late 1999, after it was identified that there was a need for affordable counselling in Bath. Several clergy identified this need and our CEO, Jan Robertson (formerly Douglas-Bate), was asked to pioneer this new service in the Crypt of St Michael’s Church. Since then we have grown and developed and work with GP surgeries, Drugs and Alcohol Agencies, DHI, housing associations, schools, universities, the police, social services and other counselling agencies to name but a few. We offer counselling to all and have funding available for those who are on a low income.

We are indebted to St John’s Hospital for their ongoing support of this vital work in the centre of Bath.

The staff team now numbers 15 which is a huge jump from when our CEO, Jan Robertson started the project alone in 1999. All our counsellors are professionally trained to Diploma level or above and are regularly supervised, enjoy ongoing supervision and professional development. We take placement counsellors each academic year.

We have over 100+ clients through the agency each week.

Jan Robertson is the CEO of Focus and has been a person centered therapist since 1993. She has two post grad Diplomas in Counselling (one from the University of Bristol) and a certificate in Supervision from the University of Swansea.

Jan is the co founder of Focus Counselling and is passionate about her work. She now has a team of sixteen and this will probably need to increase in the next year due to the demand for the services of Focus. Jan has her own clinical case load, lectures, supervises and leads the work of Focus.
