Anger, Self-Esteem and Young People

Anger is at the heart of mental health and many young people are full of anger, expressed or otherwise. Yet if no one’s listening to that anger when it’s expressed as words, it quickly gets turned into behaviour. So how do we listen? How do we work with rather than against such a potentially nerve-racking, intimidating and upsetting feeling? How do we make sense of young people’s hatred? And what part does self-esteem play in all this? What exactly is ‘self-esteem’ and how do young people develop it? What do we mean by a self? How does a self develop? How can a damaged self ever be repaired?

This day will be of particular interest to professionals working with young people in education, health, social services or other professional contexts. The day will be both theoretical and experiential. We’ll share ideas, experiences and learn together.

The day will be led by Nick Luxmoore, a trainer, school counsellor, teacher, youth worker and psychodrama psychotherapist (UKCP registered). Nick has over 35 years’ experience of working with young people and with the professionals who support them. His career has included teaching English and Drama in schools and prisons, teaching counselling at Oxford Brookes University, running a youth centre and youth theatre, setting up and managing a young people’s counselling and information service, working as a school counsellor and as a counsellor with young refugees and asylum seekers. He is the author of nine books about therapeutic work with young people and writes a blog for ‘Psychology Today’. See
