Referral Process & Pricing

Focus offers affordable counselling on a sliding scale, helping people of all socioeconomic backgrounds to access life-improving therapy. We have helped those with eating disorders, addiction, bereavement, childhood abuse, trauma, depression, anxiety and much more.

Our Referral Process

Below is the general referral process for adults. The process is similar for couples, although both partners must be present at the initial intake assessment (pricing options are the same). When referring a young person aged 17 and under, the parent/guardian attends the initial assessment and signs the agreement on behalf of the child/teenager. Get in touch with us for more information.

Get in touch…

The first step is to get in touch. You can self-refer to Focus. Please call either our Bath, Frome or Wells office to book your initial intake assessment (assessments can be done via Zoom, telephone or face-to-face).

Intake Assessment…

The second step is to attend an initial assessment. The assessment lasts roughly 30 minutes and is with a senior counsellor. This is an opportunity to hear about Focus so you can make a more informed decision about coming. We also explore what has brought you to seek counselling at this time, which will help us to match you with one of our counsellors. There will be space to explore what is affordable to you and we agree how many sessions to expect.

We ask for a £25 donation to cover the cost of this assessment (if this is an issue please get in touch).

Placing…

The next step is placing you with a counsellor. We work hard to match you well with one of counsellors as we believe the relationship is essential to an effective therapeutic connection.

There is an average waiting list of one month, but we do work hard to ensure you are seen at the earliest opportunity. Obviously, the more flexibility you have, the easier it is to place you. Once a suitable slot becomes available, you will be emailed with a suggested start date and time.

Pricing and Sliding Scale

£54 per session

This is our full-price option. Paying this amount allows you to continue counselling for as long as you need, in collaboration with your counsellor.

£20-53

If you can contribute £20-53 per session, we can supplement the rest of the session price using one of our funding streams. On this option, the maximum number of sessions is usually 10, but this is subject to each client’s individual circumstances.

£20 or less

If you can contribute £20 or less, you will be asked to complete a St John’s Foundation form (see our “Sponsors & Funding” page for more information). If this application is approved, you can then be placed for counselling with us. On this option, the maximum number of sessions funded by St John’s will be discussed with you individually.

You may also have longer term counselling if it is appropriate to see one of our trainee counsellors. This will be explored with you at assessment.
